My little stinker is rapidly approaching toddlerhood. It’s bittersweet, to say the least. Today, I spent a little time going through our baby gear to put the stuff we don’t use anymore in storage until next time. As I rummaged through these items, I realized that I really couldn’t have survived Roman’s infancy without some of them. Since I have a few friends who are approaching their due date, I figured that now might be a good time to give my recommendations of the top 5 baby products that (I believe) are essential for making it through those first few months. So, here we go:
1. 4moms Mamaroo
Okay, this one is a little pricey. However, if you can swing it (pun intended), it is really a
worthwhile investment. Or put this item on your registry for those relatives who want to buy an extravagant gift. The 4moms Mamaroo is an infant seat that is designed to move the same way that you do. It has five motions that mimic different types of movement, such as bouncing, walking, or even driving in a car. The Mamaroo also creates soothing white noise (intended to help your baby relax and sleep) and has a port for connecting a phone or MP3 player so you can play whatever music baby likes.
This was literally the ONLY thing that would get my son to sleep in the early months. In fact, this became the primary place where he took his naps. I would have been lost without this, I’m sure. Not only is this bouncer great for putting baby to sleep; it is also super light weight and easy to assemble (which was a huge plus for this non-mechanical mama). Oh, and if you are a Ju-Ju-Be lover, there is a newborn insert for the Mamaroo in the Black Diamond Print.
2. Gripe Water
Those little infant tummies are so sensitive. And when your baby’s tummy is upset, there will be no peace in your home. Our son had horrible issues with his digestion from the time he was born until he was around 4 months old. The best advice we got was to use Gripe Water. We used the Mommy’s Bliss Double Pack because it is all natural with only fennel and ginger. This stuff would calm my son down almost instantly. It gave him enough relief from his upset tummy that he could finally get some sleep. In fact, he eventually learned to recognize the bottle and would smile and flap his arms when he saw it. It was truly a life saver.
3. Yummy Mitt Teether
Hell hath no fury like an infant with teeth coming in. You buy a million different teething toys, only to find that your feisty little one launches it across the room (and then screams that he can’t reach it anymore). The Yummy Mitt teether is a glove that fits gently over your little one’s hand. The end of the glove is made of 100% food grade silicone that feels great on those inflamed little gums. And since the glove is securely attached to your baby’s hand, it can’t get launched or lost. I bought this teether with some hesitation because I wasn’t sure if my son would tolerate it. I feared that having his hand obscured by the glove would panic him and send him into a tantrum. I was very pleasantly surprised to see that the glove did not bother him at all. Indeed, he loved it!
4. USB Rechargeable Stroller/ Car Seat Fan
My son was an April baby. Here in the south, he was born into some wicked summ
er heat that lasted well into October. When babies are first born, they have a very hard time regulating their body temperature. The result for my son was that he was constantly hot and irritable. It took us a very long time to realize that his irritability — particularly in the car seat and the stroller — was
because he was overheating. We purchased a mini fan with a clip that allowed us to attach it to the car seat or stroller. We chose a USB rechargeable fan by Glovion. It is totally portable, has a 4 hour battery life (of continuous use) and rapid recharge via USB cable. This little fan got us through MANY a hot outing.
5.Infantino Grow-With-Me Activity Gym and Ball Pit
Thislittle activity gym has been in the background of several of my YouTube videos and Instagram photos, and I get questions about it all the time. For good reason! This little activity center has been my son’s absolute favorite toy throughout his infancy. What is great about this play gym is that it transforms from lay and play to sit and play. In the early months before baby can hold his head up, he can lay down on the colorful mat and get sensory stimulation from the engaging toys hanging above. When baby is big enough to sit up on his own, the play gym converts into a ball pit with 40 colorful balls to play with. My son has had hours of fun in this little play gym, and he still loves it. And this mama has certainly loved being able to get a few things done while he keeps himself busy!
